Countries such as India, which have traditionally excelled in this home textile market, have adeptly seized the opportunity. As the reverberations of the pandemic subside and the ‘China Plus One’ sourcing strategy materializes, all forecasts regarding robust export demand have materialized, greatly benefiting the nation’s home textile exporters. In 2021, these adept exporters contributed significantly to the global landscape, collectively manufacturing approximately US $7.34 billion worth of home textile goods, with a substantial 60% of this production, roughly amounting to US $4.40 billion, earmarked for export-oriented markets.
Notably, the United States, serving as the premier export destination for Indian home textile products, constituted nearly 58% of the total export value. India’s shipments of home textile goods to the United States amassed a commendable US $2.60 billion, surpassing China’s efforts, which managed only half of India’s value and secured US $1.29 billion from its home textile exports to the United States. In stark contrast, India has established a significant lead over its Asian counterparts, with Bangladesh’s shipment of home textile goods to the United States amounting to US $450 million in 2021, while Vietnam’s contribution in this regard was a more modest US $17.77 million.
What adds an intriguing dimension to India’s success is its robust growth across all seven major home textile export categories. This expansion is evident when compared to both the year 2020 and the pre-pandemic period of 2019. In contrast, China experienced a decline in its exports to the United States in four categories in 2021 when compared to 2019.
These seven major home textile export categories encompass Table Linen, Knitted Bed Linen, Woven Bed Linen, Bed Spreads (Quilts), Terry Towels, Cotton Pillows, and Curtains. India’s proficiency and upward trajectory in each of these categories underscore its enduring strength in the global home textile market.
